Δρόμος or οδός?

In everyday Greek, we usually say δρόμος:

Ο δρόμος είναι κλειστός.
The road is closed.

But on street signs and in addresses, you will usually see οδός:

Οδός Ερμού
Ermou Street

Οδός is the Ancient Greek word for road, way, or path. It has remained in use as the formal term for street names and addresses.

Δρόμος also existed in Ancient Greek. It was connected with running and originally referred to a race or running course. Over time, its meaning expanded and it became the everyday Modern Greek word for road.

Two words. Thousands of years of history.

If you think of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as the beginning of science fiction, Ancient Greek literature has a surprise for you.

More than 1,600 years before Frankenstein, Lucian of Samosata wrote Ἀληθῆ Διηγήματα (True Stories), a second-century satire often described as the earliest surviving work of science fiction in the Western tradition.

Its travellers are carried to the Moon, caught in a war between the inhabitants of the Moon and the Sun, and swallowed by an enormous sea creature.

Lucian, who wrote in Ancient Greek, came from Samosata, a city in the Roman province of Syria.

Science fiction may be considered a modern genre, but some of its earliest surviving imaginative journeys were written in Ancient Greek.
