:: The Flesh of Himation ::
Explorations in Latex and Stone by Ella Jo Skinner

The flesh of Himation (explorations in Latex and Stone) is the first solo exhibition by Welsh audio-visual artist Ella Jo Skinner. During her recent time spent in Athens, Skinner has been influenced by the ethereal folds of the himation and chiton worn by the marble statues of the Korai, the maidens of the Acropolis in Ancient Greece.

Working with latex and the flesh of human bodies in contrast to digital photographs of these stone garments, Skinner has created a playful juxtaposition between the softness of bodies and the harshness of the stone.

Specialising in installation, Ella Jo Skinner seeks to create visceral environments in which art is to be experienced rather than contextualised. Included in the exhibition is a sound piece, “The Confession Box”, initially performed at Islington Mill, Manchester, UK in July 2022.

In this piece, Skinner recorded herself repenting her sins at different Confession Boxes in Catholic Churches and Cathedrals in Greater Manchester. This piece, in relation to images of the Goddesses and Priestesses of Greek Antiquity, connotes a journey that takes the viewer from the confines of a Pseudo-Christian Capitalistic society to a magical pagan past.

“FROM AFAR”
- Artist Amanda Wilson through this exhibition will reference her perspective as an American woman watching her rights go up in flames while being abroad in Europe. While she is out of the direct line of fire currently she is able to evaluate how the USA’s system of government has truly failed her.

She is not overwhelmed by conversation and protest in person, only reading and digesting opinions and articles online. The distance she, at the moment has to the US is allowing her to process the implications this legislation carries. Additionally, being currently surrounded by Europeans with strong opinions about America’s hypocrisy her experiences here have been very eye opening and only bolstering her frustration towards her country.

With Manon Beretti Prenant’s supervision and curation, they will share their experiences and opinions about this issue though Amanda Wilsons works. Both Artist Amanda and Curator Manon feel that women are constantly exploited and subjected to violating experiences through unjust medical care, coercive sexual experiences, and objectification that begins even before puberty.

They will will use this exhibition as a safe space for outspoken support of femininity in direct protest to laws that strip women of their bodily rights.
