Barents Sea cod: how port controls helped cut IUU fishing 🐟⚓️

In the early 2000s, illegal/unreported cod catches surged (e.g., over 100,000 tonnes in 2005). Strong Norway–Russia cooperation, stricter port inspections, and better traceability through NEAFC helped curb undeclared landings.

Result: IUU estimates dropped sharply and were reported as near-zero around 2009.
