There are various ways to categorize coughs, but one way to group them is by duration (acute, subacute, chronic) and by the presence or absence of mucus production (wet or dry/non-productive). Additionally, some coughs are characterized by their sound or specific associated conditions.
Here's a breakdown of 7 types of coughs:
Acute Cough: Sudden onset, usually lasting less than 3 weeks, often due to a cold or upper respiratory infection.
Chronic Cough: Persistent cough lasting longer than 8 weeks, potentially caused by asthma, GERD, or other underlying conditions.
Wet/Productive Cough: Characterized by the production of mucus or phlegm.
Dry/Non-Productive Cough: Does not produce mucus or phlegm.
Barking Cough: A harsh, distinctive cough, often associated with croup, particularly in young children.
Whooping Cough: A severe, infectious cough with a "whooping" sound during inhalation after a coughing fit, caused by pertussis.
Paroxysmal Cough: Characterized by violent, uncontrollable fits of coughing that can be exhausting and painful, potentially leading to vomiting.
