Imagine the potential if we were to reconsider our street corners.
Until now, many of our roadside intersections have been heavily focused on vehicular use, posing risks for pedestrians when crossing the road.
It's time to change direction and reenvision these spaces to create a brighter, safer, and more inclusive urban landscape.
π By redesigning our street corners, we can enjoy numerous benefits:
β Ample space for pedestrians to walk freely and comfortably πΆββοΈπΆββοΈ
β Reduced crossing distances and waiting times β³πΈ
β Infusion of greenery to add shade to our bustling cityscapes πΏπ
β Safer streets where everyone can navigate with confidence π¦πͺ
β Beautiful street corners that enhance the aesthetic charm of our cities πποΈ
π‘ One inspiring example comes from PGAA Creative Design in Manila, the Philippines. π΅π Their innovative approach to street corner redesign illustrates precisely what's possible when we prioritise pedestrians and community safety. π

COMPATIBILITY IS KEY! π
It is important to consider the compatibility of different materials, especially when combining porous and non-porous materials. Porous materials have tiny interconnected pores that allow for water and air transfer, while non-porous materials are generally impermeable to water and air. It's best to avoid combining materials with vastly different porosities to prevent problems with moisture and air infiltration.
When using porous and non-porous materials together, it's crucial to properly seal the joint between them to prevent water and air from penetrating the porous material. This can be achieved with sealants or specialised products.
For example, the type and porosity of render used in a building also affects its ability to "breathe." Breathable paints allow moisture v***r to pass through, preventing moisture buildup and mold growth on porous surfaces like brick, stucco, and natural stone. Non-breathable paints, on the other hand, are best used on non-porous surfaces like metal or plastic. Using non-breathable paints on porous materials can cause moisture infiltration and damage. Therefore, choosing the appropriate type of paint for the specific application and material is crucial.
In summary, selecting and installing compatible materials and render types is crucial for long-term durability and performance of existing buildings.
