The process of extinguishing a fire is in three ways:
Starvation, by taking the fuel away from the fire or taking the fire away from the fuel or reducing the quantity or bulk of the fuel.
Smothering, by allowing the fire to consume the oxygen while preventing the inward flow of more oxygen or adding an inert gas to the burning mixture.
Cooling, by adding water to divert the heat energy.
