Installing Windows & Doors Before Plastering

One of the questions we get asked a lot on site is this:
Should windows and doors be installed before plastering… or after? 🤔

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer — but TIMING, MEASUREMENT, and COORDINATION matter more than most people realise.

Let’s start with installing before plastering 👇

When windows and doors are installed before plastering (with margins left to be dressed later), it allows installers to:

✅ Work with the true masonry opening
✅ Achieve better alignment and leveling
✅ Secure frames properly without forcing
✅ Avoid size conflicts caused by plaster thickness
This method works well because fabrication is done against real, existing openings, not assumptions on drawings.

Of course, frames must be properly protected during plastering — otherwise, finishing trades can cause damage to the windows and doors that have been installed. There are be the need to cover them properly during plastering, painting and other finishing works.
