The situation of the Ezza people residing in Akpoga, Enugu State, is deeply concerning and demands urgent attention.
For some time now, whenever I speak about the treatment of Abakaliki people within the South-East, many tend to dismiss it as mere opinion or unnecessary noise. But the truth remains constant it will always surface, no matter how uncomfortable it may be.
The Ezza community in Akpoga, which became part of Enugu State due to boundary adjustments during state creation, has endured years of neglect and hardship. Despite their long-standing presence and peaceful coexistence, they now face an even more troubling reality reports of displacement and being asked to vacate the very land they have called home for generations.
This raises a critical question: where exactly are these people expected to go?
It is unjust to destroy homes and render families homeless, especially in a community where they have lived peacefully for over a century. Let us not forget that their settlement was not by force, but rooted in mutual agreement and understanding between their forefathers and the host community. Attempting to rewrite this history today by labeling them as outsiders simply because of their origin undermines our shared values and unity.
This growing pattern of division and double standards within Alaigbo is dangerous. If left unchecked, it will do more harm than good to our collective identity and future. Every Igbo person has the fundamental right to live, thrive, and coexist peacefully in any part of Alaigbo without fear of discrimination or displacement.
In light of this, I call on Ohanaeze Ndigbo, as well as leaders across the South-East—including the governments of Ebonyi State under the leadership of his Excellency Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and the government of Enugu State His Excellency Peter Ndubuisi Mbah to urgently intervene and address this issue with fairness and wisdom.
Furthermore, I urge well-meaning sons and daughters of Ebonyi State to rise to the occasion and lend their voices toward ensuring justice and peace. Let us prioritize dialogue, understanding, and unity, so that harmony can be restored between the good people of Ezza and the Akpoga community.
Peaceful coexistence must not only be preached it must be protected.
