The mother of my patient became furious when the doctor explained that her daughter had been diagnosed with peptic ulcer disease after a series of tests.

Earlier, the daughter had complained of a burning sensation in the upper abdomen, heartburn, indigestion, nausea, and vomiting, which had persisted for several days. Her mother brought her for treatment after her attempts with alternative medications proved ineffective.

"The abdominal scan and blood test show that your daughter has an ulcer," the doctor explained. The mother, however, was enraged and blamed her daughter for the condition due to her habitual skipping of meals.

This was due to her misconception that skipping meals directly causes peptic ulcers, though, in reality, it does not cause the disease but can exacerbate symptoms.
The mother was unaware that her daughter had already developed an ulcer, which was now manifesting through these symptoms.

It’s important to note that in healthy individuals, a protective mucous layer shields the digestive tract from the corrosive stomach acids that aid in digestion. This mucous layer, especially in the stomach and duodenum (the upper part of the small intestine), is designed to withstand the digestive acids and enzymes and to repair itself after any minor damage.

However, persistent infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and the frequent use of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can weaken this protective mucous layer.

As a result, stomach acids can seep into the underlying tissue, leading to sores, which is how peptic ulcers develop.

1/03/25 -Diary of a passionate nurseπŸ“β€οΈ

I cared for a 15-year-old female patient with sickle cell disease in the midst of a painful crisis. Despite administering pain medication earlier, her pain was overwhelming.

Through her tears, she looked at me and said, β€œAunty Abigail, I’m in so much pain.” In that moment, I wished I could take away her pain instantly, but all I could do was reassure her, reminding her that Jesus Christ still heals and that we were providing the best care to support her recovery.

To my dear singles: Sickle cell disease can be prevented. Please take the necessary steps to check your genotype before making life-long commitments. πŸ€΅πŸ’πŸ‘°β€β™‚

Let’s protect future generations. πŸ’–πŸ‘¬πŸ‘«πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦
