This week saw the release of Guernsey's Tax Reform Policy Letter.
Weirdly, Di has been the one taking a real interest in tax and social security reform recently. Normally she's all about Xero, apps, business growth and the joyful "adding value" stuff!
So, if you've found yourself wondering "what does Di think?", you're in luck.
At DNA, we help clients understand the numbers behind major decisions and policy changes. With tax reform potentially affecting businesses, employers, the self-employed and households across the island, Di has taken a detailed look at the proposals.
Her conclusion?
The package is considerably softer than many expected.
There are some genuinely positive changes, including the new Social Security allowance and the scaling back of employer contribution increases.
There are also some important questions that still need answering, particularly around aspects of the proposed Social Security reforms and the policy thinking behind them.
Most importantly, this isn't a simple debate about whether we like GST or not.
It's about how Guernsey funds public services, supports future generations and creates a sustainable tax system for the long term.
We've shared Di's analysis, including a breakdown of where the money comes from, what has changed, what she likes, and the areas she believes deserve further discussion.

π¨ Xero Top Tip π¨
If you're setting up a new Xero account in Guernsey, make sure you select United Kingdom as your region β not Guernsey.
It sounds counterintuitive, but choosing Guernsey will put you onto Xero's global version rather than the UK version that's designed to work with local requirements.
This isn't a minor issue. It creates problems with things like bank feeds and other key functionality, and unfortunately there isn't a simple fix. In most cases, the only solution is to start again and migrate your data to a new UK Xero organisation β an avoidable cost and inconvenience for any business.
We see this happen far more often than we'd like, especially with new businesses getting started on their cloud accounting journey. That's why we're sharing this tip: we don't want anyone wasting time and money fixing a simple setup error that could have been avoided from day one.
Five seconds during setup can save hours of frustration later. π
If you're unsure whether you've set things up correctly, or you'd like support getting started with Xero, get in touch with our team. We're always happy to help you get it right from day one!
