There is a well-documented “CPR gender gap” where women are statistically less likely to receive bystander CPR during an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest — especially in public places.

Here are some of the key statistics:

Women are around 14% less likely than men to receive bystander CPR and defibrillation in public cardiac arrests.

UK and European research found:

●68% of women received bystander CPR compared with 73% of men.

●Women also had poorer survival outcomes after cardiac arrest:
Survival to hospital admission: 34% for women vs 37% for men
Survival from admission to discharge: 37% for women vs 55% for men

Some studies showed women in public cardiac arrests were:
39% likely to receive CPR compared with 45% for men
●Men were approximately 1.23 times more likely to receive help from bystanders.

Researchers and surveys suggest several reasons for this disparity:
Fear of “inappropriate touching”
Worry about causing injury
Hesitation around touching breasts
Difficulty recognising cardiac arrest symptoms in women.

CPR training manikins often being male-shaped or flat-chested.

The important message from organisations like the British Heart Foundation is:
If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally, start CPR immediately — regardless of gender.
Even imperfect CPR dramatically improves survival chances.

Emergency services are using bespoke female CPR manikins to help "reduce hesitation in people delivering emergency care to women".

This means a great deal to me… 💙💚
As part of the Worcester Community First Responders, I see first-hand how important those first few minutes in an emergency really are. Community First Responders are volunteers who respond alongside the ambulance service, often arriving before an ambulance to provide lifesaving care when every second counts.
That’s why I’m passionate about teaching CPR in schools, workplaces, and community groups. Knowing how to recognise cardiac arrest, call for help, and start CPR can genuinely save someone’s life before emergency services arrive.
The more people in our community who feel confident to step in and help, the safer our community becomes.
If you, your workplace, school, or local group would be interested in a CPR awareness session or learning basic lifesaving skills, please feel free to message me and we can arrange a course. 💙💚🚑
We are also currently fundraising for a new response vehicle to help keep us responding to emergencies within our community. If you would like to support us, donations of any size are hugely appreciated. 💙

We need your help!

💛 Every call matters. Every second counts. 💛
As Community First Responders, we volunteer our time to attend medical emergencies in our local community — often arriving before an ambulance to provide lifesaving care, reassurance, and support when people need it most.
To continue doing what we do, we rely heavily on donations and community support. We’re currently fundraising through our JustGiving page to help fund essential equipment, training, and resources that allow us to keep responding when the call comes in.
If you’re able to spare even a small amount, it would make a huge difference to our team and the people we help every single day.
Please consider donating and sharing our page to help us reach more people ❤️

🚑 Worcester — we need your help 💛
Our Community First Responders’ car is becoming unreliable and costly to run, and we need a new vehicle to keep responding to emergencies quickly.
We’ve set up a JustGiving page to raise funds — every donation, big or small, helps keep us on the road saving lives.
👉 Please donate if you can and share to support us.
Thank you 💛

When you park, please take a moment to think beyond convenience. Fire engines, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles need clear, wide access to reach people in need. Parking too close to junctions, on corners, across entrances, or on narrow roads can delay emergency response and put lives at risk.

Please help keep the community safe by:
✅ Avoiding parking on corners or bends.
✅ Leaving enough space on narrow streets.
✅ Not blocking driveways or access points.
✅ Following all parking signs and restrictions.

Please help to keep routes clear and ensure our fire crews can get through when they’re needed most.
Thank you for doing your part to keep everyone safe.
