Right at the start of the fostering journey we ask applicants how they feel about facilitating family time between birth parents and the children in their care. It can be daunting and stressful on both sides, but children need to see the adults in their life getting along. The child is the strongest common denominator – two adults who both love a child. And sometimes the birth parent may well be ‘childlike’ due to their experiences. As Tash shares, “It was almost like Barbara was her Mum too, taking her three kids out for dinner”. Foster carers often share how significant it can feel when they can broker strong relationships with birth family for the good of all. And, yes, sometimes they feel they are parenting the child in their care and post parenting the birth parent too. But when the best interest of the child is at the heart of all we do, then supporting the parents is integral to that. Compassion in relationships is powerful whatever the outcome.
