Friday Round-Up โ€“ One job this week reminded us exactly why choosing the right installer matters.

This week we were contacted by an elderly couple after their installer stopped responding to emails and phone calls.

They already had a fully operational solar PV system that had been installed in 2015, complete with Feed-in Tariff (FIT) payments.

They told us they had been advised that their existing system needed replacing in order to add battery storage. In our experience, this often isn't necessary, and replacing an existing FIT system can have significant implications if not handled correctly.

The original system had been removed and replaced with:

10 replacement solar panels (manufacturer currently unknown as they cannot be identified without removing panels from the roof).
A FoxESS 1.5kW inverter connected to five panels.
A Hanchu hybrid inverter connected to the other five panels together with a 5kWh battery.

When we attended, the installation wasn't operating correctly and, more concerningly, we discovered a number of issues that, in our professional opinion, presented electrical safety concerns - No earthing to the inverter,, crossed polarity at the isolator to name a few.

We worked through the installation, liaised with the battery manufacturer to transfer ownership of the equipment onto the correct system, rectified the faults we found and successfully got the system back up and running.

Unfortunately, our investigations didn't stop there.

We have since discovered that the required DNO application also appears not to have been submitted, meaning the installation may not have been correctly notified to the Distribution Network Operator. The company is not MCS registered so they did not issue a new MCS cert for the Solar or the Battery, and also no EIC or Building control has been done......

We've advised the homeowners to contact their credit card provider regarding a Section 75 claim, as they may have additional protection where work has not been completed or documented as contracted.

This post isn't about naming or shaming a company.

It's about reminding homeowners that solar isn't just about panels and batteries.

A professional installation should always include:
โœ… Correct system design.
โœ… Electrical certification.
โœ… DNO applications where required.
โœ… Building Regulations compliance where applicable.
โœ… MCS certification where applicable.
โœ… A full handover pack.
โœ… After-sales support when you need it.

The cheapest quote isn't always the cheapest in the long run. We often get dismissed as too expensive straight away but we are still responding to customer of ours who have been our customers for many more years than some of the new companies have been trading.

The highlight of our week wasn't fixing the technical problemsโ€”it was seeing the relief on the homeowners' faces when their system was finally working properly again.

If you're thinking of having solar or battery storage installed, or you've had work carried out and you're unsure whether everything has been completed correctly, don't be afraid to ask questions or seek a second opinion. And sometimes too cheap is worse than too expensive.

Have a great weekend everyone from all of us at NPES Solar โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ”‹
