Look at me....chuffed to be in my Highway to Hell t-shirt, a Christmas present from my wife! She knows I love AC/DC so much that I've even said I want Highway to Hell played at my funeral...just so all my friends can smile and "head-bang"!!!

I've planned my funeral...music, dresscode, instructions to celebrate my life and not mourn my death....why don't you plan yours?

Interesting programme on ITV1 tonight (watch it on +1 at 8.30) "Funerals: a costly undertaking"

Said all the right things, how we should be planning ahead as none of us know when our time will be up, how difficult it is for loved ones to make sensible and practical decisions at such a horrendously emotional time, how costs are rising year upon year. Not sure I agree with DIY funerals however!!!

As good and informative as it was, it did have a few gaps and errors. They stated that an average funeral costs around £3600, that was last year. The recently published Sun Life Cost of Dying report 2016 says that the average cost has now increased to £3897. No mention at all of insuring against the cost or putting in place a proper pre-paid plan.

We should all be making some kind of plan, its the most inevitable cost, or expense, of our lives.

Don't leave it to others...it's going to happen...you plan it, you choose, it's your funeral.

It's been a busy week, talking to lots of clients about Asset Protection Trusts, sometimes also known as Family or Home Protection Trusts.

A great way of ring-fencing your assets that guarantees your children inherit what you've worked hard, all of your life, to build up.

I'm sure we've all either personally experienced, or heard stories from family and friends, about horrendous Probate fees and bills from solicitors...typically 3-5% of the estate value!!!...(a modest estate including a £150000 house and, say, £50000 of savings, would be potentially subject to a probate charge of between £6000-£10000)...this can be totally avoided by using one of our Trusts.

These Trusts also ensure that your family assets are protected from marital break-ups and bankruptcy; your children's partners cannot claim a share of your family assets if they divorce and any personal asset placed in the Trust cannot be seized or used by creditors to help pay business debts.....they aren't owned personally, they are wrapped up in the protective Trust wrapper, that you control.

The great news is that you and your fellow Trustees retain control of the asset, thus making access to, and use of, trust assets really simple.
