CIRCLE Q&A: What are some of the most important learnings from the start of setting up CIRCLE?

Thanks Dan Beaumont for a brilliant question. The base element to this is perseverance and grit and a clear focus on where you want to go and why.

WHY - this is the greatest factor in deciding anything. It’s the echo chamber of everything else. If this is clear then the path that it creates even with obstacles will be just growth rather than stop signs. We learnt / manoeuvred / evolved and adapted.

There’s still plenty of path to made ahead, but with the hope of creating impacts, ripples and facilitating growth for and with others.

we are CIRCLE studio.

Cassia Coop Training Centre - TYIN tegnestue architects (📍Sumatra, Indonesia)
This project led by TYIN tegnestue architects, was a project founder Rozita was involved in back in 2011 and couldn’t have been done without the vision of the client, the enthusiasm of the design team and most importantly the determination from the local workforce who were dedicated into giving as much into the build as possible.
Using local knowledge was key! How to marry tradition and modern together. Working for example with carpenters to push the boundaries of architectural pieces was an exciting aspect. Most the picture boxes, window frames and doors were created without a nail in sight, the only metal were the hinges for the windows and doors.

We are CIRCLE studio

We’re an interdisciplinary design / research collective based on the premise of education, opportunity & inclusivity through sustainability and storytelling.

Over the coming week we’ll share more info about who we are, what we do and what our aims and ambitions are as a collective.

Here’s a timeline to tell the story of the studio:

2011: Rozita (founder of CIRCLE studio), collaborated on a project with TYIN tegnestue architects, Cassia Coop Training Centre in Sumatra, Indonesia. Together with the practice, local community and artisans created a piece of architecture that not only was made from local sustainable materials but engaged on a form of architecture that bring about employment opportunities, further local building knowledge and empower the community all through education and opportunity.

2019: Rozita took a trip to Chile, San Pedro in the Atacama Desert. She spent time with a local with discussions about the poor infrastructure of the surrounding homes that lay on the edges of the heart of touristic hotspot. Cracked and crumbled walls, tin roofs with dents and folds - this wasn’t the architecture of the desert, these were forgotten structures. Asked to ‘fix’ this issue - this created the question. ‘How can architecture facilitate long term impact?’, ‘how can we be facilitator and creators?’ ‘How can we empower a community through toolkits and directions?’

2020: CIRCLE studio was born. Through the collective of a dedicated and talented team, bringing a diverse voice to the table on how to create long term impact with the community and for the community, both as designers, facilitators and educators. The studio strives to deliver these ambitions and goals whilst opening the door for other to join and sit at the table.
