Yoga is great for your body AND your mind - Check it out 👇

Many people start yoga because they want to get physically fit and more flexible. Whilst that is a welcome consequence, it also does amazing things for your mental health.

Through movement, breath, and mindful awareness, yoga can help to:
✨ Reduce stress and anxiety
✨ Calm racing thoughts
✨ Improve sleep quality
✨ Release physical tension stored in the body
✨ Increase feelings of clarity and emotional balance

If you’d like to build a regular practice that helps you feel calmer, stronger and more balanced, I’d love to support you!

🌿 Join my online yoga membership – Breathe & Balance

YOGA POSES - GUIDES NOT GOALS? 🤔

In my own yoga practice and in my teaching I use yoga āsana as a guide rather than goal.

For me, they're not something that needs to be achieved or perfected.

Yoga poses/postures initially were documented to enable one to sit in meditation for long hours. They were postures that were crafted and demonstrated usually by men who were thin and (probably) with hyper mobile bodies.

If you've not figured it out already yet, I am not a male and I am not hyper mobile. So why should I look to these intensive postures, not be able to warp my body into them and then feel a failure?

Some days, I feel really energised and spacious in my body. I breathe deeply and move smoothly, lightly and feel balanced. Other days, I feel stiff, wobbly, heavy and lethargic.

I could do the same yoga flow on both days and have completely different experiences on the mat.

I used to dance a lot. You got praise for touching your toes, having long legs and bending your body into shapes that looked 'good'. Similarly, I've been to yoga classes where the teacher has stopped the class and made everyone look at the most flexible student doing the 'most advanced version' of a pose.

For me, yoga āsana is about strengthening the connection my brain and my body - which often get disconnected when I sit down still all day and only use my brain for work. They are shapes which provide a vehicle of exploration and expression.

Sometimes the exploration is - how focused can my awareness of my body and balance be so I can come into a headstand?

Sometimes the exploration is - how can I move in a way that calms me after a hard day and helps me sleep better?

Yoga isn't a performance. It is not a test.

Postures are directions, not destinations.
