What is Chinese Herbal Medicine?
Herbal Therapy is the main component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Guided by eastern philosophy and medical theory, it treats the whole body in holistic manner (not just the symptoms) by balancing your body's Yin and Yang functions. Herbs include dry leaf stalks, flowers, seeds and roots. Each herb is used for a specific purpose and performs specific function(s). Herbal therapy is a mixture of around 10 to 15 different herbs prescribed by a TCM practitioner. Your practitioner will determine the correct mixture after a consultation involving an assessment of your symptoms, a review of your medical history and an examination of the tongue, pulse and sometimes skin. The herbs provide your body with natural nutrients that strengthen your internal functions and hence reduce your symptoms. They are recognised as being a good substitute for vitamins and pharmaceutical supplements.
