Some interesting work over the last few days due to the carnage of storm Pia! Clearing complex failed trees throughout for Sheffield Council and Newfield School. This work is thought provoking, the team thinking outside of the box to ensure we are all safe whilst working in precarious positions.

Crown reduction of this mature Birch tree due to an extensive cavity within the major stem. Striking a balance can be difficult. Remove enough growth to prevent future mechanical failure whilst retaining enough foliage to maintain its physiological health. The tree was reduced around 2-3 metres in height and 1-1.5 metres in width. Birch trees don’t tolerate heavy reductions well in my experience, large pruning cuts often lead to decay and formation of cavities at the site of old pruning wounds.
