Aged 50.
And finally realising something that would have been useful information about 30 years ago:
I don’t actually have to stay anywhere I feel small.
The strange power of midlife is this:
You stop negotiating your own worth.
You simply move towards the places where you are met properly.
The old saying goes that talking to yourself is the first sign of madness.
But there’s actually a very specific way of speaking to yourself out loud that can interrupt anxious thinking surprisingly quickly.
When you address yourself by name -
“Lucy… what’s going on here?”
“Lucy… take a breath.”
- you create a small amount of distance between you and the emotion.
Instead of being swallowed by the thought, you step outside it.
And from that place, it’s much easier to calm your nervous system and think clearly.
It sounds slightly ridiculous.
But there’s solid psychology behind why it works.
And if you’ve struggled with anxiety as much as I have over the years, you’ll probably find this technique surprisingly helpful.
