Sleep Fairy and Parent Rescue
π How dark does your baby's room need to be?
Usually, darker than parents think.
For most babies, especially those over 4 months old, a room that's dim isn't enough. To get the best naps and nights, most families need both blackout blinds and blackout curtains to make the room properly dark.
I'm not talking about cave-dark where you can't see your hand in front of your face. I'm talking about dark enough that your baby can't easily focus on objects around the room.
Why does this matter?
Because light tells the brain it's time to be awake.
Sunlight suppresses melatonin, the hormone that helps us fall asleep and stay asleep. So if a room is too bright, your baby may find it harder to settle, take shorter naps, wake more frequently, or wake earlier in the morning.
And yes, this applies to naps too!
One of the biggest mistakes I see is parents making the room dark at night but leaving it bright during the day. Babies don't know that naps are supposed to be different. If the room is bright, it's much easier for them to become distracted and much harder for them to switch off.
If your baby is struggling with short naps, early waking, or settling to sleep, take a look at their sleep environment. Sometimes a darker room can make a surprisingly big difference.
Save this post for later and let me know, is your baby's room properly dark at nap time? π
