It looks like we’re heading back into a mini heatwave this weekend and into next week. Which reminds us that drainage problems can occur in summer as well as winter.

☀️ Prolonged dry spells can cause pipes to shift in shrinking soil, creating cracks and displaced joints.

🌳 Tree roots searching for water can get into pipes (especially if they’ve been damaged by soil shrinkage), creating blockages and more damage.

💩 And drains can become more smelly in summer, as waste breaks down more quickly before it gets washed away (especially if those thirsty tree roots are blocking the pipes).

So, keep an eye (and nose) out for these problems in your homes or places of work. And seek expert help if you need it.

We’re helping The Insurance Charity promote the great work it does to support insurance professionals and their families in need.

By doing so, we’re also celebrating the thousands of organisations and many more people who donate to the charity.

In 2025/2026 it awarded almost £700k to those needing support in the UK and Ireland.

The charity offers one-off and regular financial support (including charitable loans) and practical guidance.

Employers who want to help don’t need to pay or sign up to become a supporter.

Nor are they involved in beneficiary applications. The charity acts as a trusted partner that complements the support employers already provide.

People don’t need to be in crisis to reach out for help, either.
