There’s a stage no one talks about.

Not the picking. Not the arranging. Not the pour.

The waiting.

When the zinnias and cosmos are laid flat under the press and you just… leave them. You can’t rush it. You can’t check. You trust that what goes in will come back as something worth keeping.

Some of these, the orange ones, the deep reds, came straight from my garden this summer. I grow them knowing where they’ll end up. Still, every time I open the press I hold my breath a little.

And then she messaged me.

“A robin. Butterflies. A tiny fairy. It’s our cottage name.”

I already had the flowers. I just didn’t know yet who they were for.

That’s the thing about making this way, sometimes the garden knows before you do.
