Trice / Arkayik

It's been a while but Arkayik is back. For this release I wanted to make some longer, multi-part tracks, in the vein of some of the musicians who got me into electronic music back in the 80s and 90s, like Jean-Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream. Somewhere along the way darkness and alienation seeped in. The result is a soundtrack to our increasingly apocalyptic present.

Deformation is about being heretical. It's about following your own guiding light, regardless of external approval or condemnation.

Four tracks with not much of a binding thread other than glitchy arpeggiated synths, sampled breaks and a tenuous link to the Reformation.

The EP begins with Step Up, an invitation to join the dance. High velocity footwork drums and chord stabs are intensified by breaks and vocal chops, getting things off on the right foot.

We then meet Barakat, where blessings are bestowed upon the wedded lovers. Middle Eastern darbuka and ney combine with a garage beat and warping bassline to move your body and soul.

Fast Heart was inspired by my friend and collaborator Ben Rath's Slow Heart project and is shaped around samples of his acoustic guitar playing. Multiple breakbeats are layered around one another to form a dense bed of percussion for this bucolic psychedelia, best played with in a field somewhere. Next we take it back to the old school with an acid rave tune. This Polythene Mask is one you might wear to a warehouse party and comes complete with a 303 style bassline, driving kick drum and more amens than you can shake a stick at.

Finally, when the night's gone on too long and everything becomes thin and hollow you might "feel hunted". Excitotoxicity tries to capture that state when the fun is waning and everything starts feeling alien. The home made drums and acid bass get crunchy and raspy. "I'm not afraid of anything!" Am I?
