Last week, our Lancashire Anti-Poverty Network Coordinator, Patsy Davies, alongside Jon Sands and Rebecca Samuels, held an online webinar to support professionals working across Lancashire in having conversations about money.

Too often, a lack of confidence around money stops people from talking about it, which lets people experiencing poverty to slip through the cracks. In our previous research, we identified opportunities for non-advice professionals to develop their money guidance skills, to be able to support families and individuals facing poverty and low income before crisis strikes. In doing so, households are able to access support earlier and through a greater number of avenues.

Webinars such as these are the starting point to begin to explore what money support can look like from a non-advice professional perspective, and how developing skills and confidence in areas of guidance around topics like money can add capacity to specialist advice services. In a recent report by our Lancashire Network Development Coordinator, Patsy Davies, on how localities deliver money advice and support in Lancashire- an area with some of the highest child poverty rates outside London- highlighted some challenges. The research found out that just under a quarter (24%) of non-advice professionals felt confident in signposting people to services that could help with money and benefits issues.

Having the right knowledge and confidence can make a real difference for people experiencing financial difficulties.

Our Maximising Household Income training aims to equip professionals and volunteers with the skills to identify local and national support, understand the social security system, and use practical approaches to help people build financial resilience.

Today marks a huge milestone as we launch the Warrington Money Advice Referral Tool (MART), our first outside of Manchester.

The MART is a easy-to-use practical tool that is created to help organisations better support people facing financial hardship by making financial support easier to access. From GP surgeries and schools to hospitals and community groups, MART helps frontline staff to signpost and refer individuals to relevant financial guidance, benefits support and local services.

We’re proud to bring this support to Warrington in collaboration with Warrington Borough Council and the Warrington VCSE sector. Excited to see the impact it will have in the community!

At Resolve Poverty, we believe local action on poverty is crucial, and our latest research shows there is still a long way to go.

Our new report maps strategic local action on poverty across England and finds:

📍 Just 16% of councils currently have an anti-poverty strategy in place
📍 A further 19% plan to introduce one within the next year
📍 Only 10% have formally adopted the socio-economic duty

Councils play a critical role in preventing and reducing poverty, but action remains uneven. That’s why we’re urging government to further empower local authorities and introduce a statutory requirement for all councils to develop well-resourced anti-poverty strategies.
