They made them take it off. We never forgot. Should jewellery be brought back to the pitch?
Back in the ‘90s, you saw jewellery on the pitch all the time. From chains to earrings, football once had a different kind of personality on the pitch.
So why was it banned? In 1999, FIFA officially outlawed all forms of jewellery, necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings. From that point, referees were instructed to require removal before kick-off. No exceptions. Even wedding rings.
Before the ban, some of the greatest players wore jewellery like it was part of the kit. The pitch wasn’t just about performance, it was a part of a player’s identity.
Boots have become more colourful, hairstyles bolder, tattoos are everywhere. If football is identity, attitude, and artistry. Why can’t that extend past kick-off?
The first step to winning is showing up, and being crazy enough to think anything is possible.
Do you know what it takes to be a winner?
