What is a Virtual Power Plant? 20/04/2026

Virtual Power Plants explained. Your home battery could be earning you money and most people have no idea.

If you've got solar panels and a battery in your Stockport or Manchester home, you could be getting paid to support the national grid during busy periods. It's called a Virtual Power Plant and it's easier to join than you'd think.

No switching supplier. No extra hardware. Just your existing battery doing a little extra work a few times a month and earning you £1 per kWh while it does it.

We've just published a guide explaining exactly how it works, how much you can earn, and which batteries qualify.

Typical annual earnings for a Stockport home:
💰 Solar self-consumption savings: £600–£800
💰 Smart export payments: £150–£200
💰 VPP earnings: £120–£180
💰 Smart tariff savings: £150–£250

That's potentially over £1,400 a year from one system.

What is a Virtual Power Plant? A Virtual Power Plant is a network of thousands of home batteries and sometimes EV chargers and heat pumps connected together through a software platform and coordinated to act like a single large power station.

Last night’s Channel 4 programme Guy Martin’s House Without Bills sparked a lot of interest in how UK homes can dramatically reduce heating costs using modern energy technology.

One of the key takeaways from the programme was the role air source heat pumps can play when they’re properly designed, installed and matched to the property.

We’ve written a new blog article that explains this in more detail:

“How Heat Pumps Can Help Cut Your Heating Costs – Inspired by Guy Martin”

In the article we cover:

How air source heat pumps actually work in the UK climate
Typical installation costs and what affects them
Realistic expectations around savings and performance
Why insulation and correct system design matter
How heat pumps can be combined with solar for even better results
What to look for when choosing a local installer

At Solarus, we install air source heat pumps across Stockport, Greater Manchester and Cheshire, and we’re proud to be Vaillant Approved Installers. That means systems are designed and installed to manufacturer standards, not just fitted and left.

If you’ve watched the programme and are wondering whether a heat pump could work for your home, this article is a good place to start.
