Methodist churches are set to file a complaint over HSBC’s financing of Glencore's Cerrejón coal mine in La Guajira, Colombia. The churches allege that the lender’s financing of the mining company is contributing to environmental harms.

The Financial Times reports that the Methodist Churches of Colombia, Ireland and Great Britain have accused HSBC of “breaching” OECD responsible business conduct guidelines in its financing of Anglo-Swiss mining and commodities group Glencore.

Glencore's Cerrejón mine is one of the world’s largest open-pit coal mines. This complaint adds to the weight of opposition to Glencore's operations from communities in La Guajira and those standing in solidarity with them around the world. At our demonstration on the global day of action last week, we marched from Glencore's London HQ to branches of HSBC and Barclays, calling out these banks for their financial backing of Glencore' controversial and destructive mining operations.
