Paragraph Projects

Paragraph Projects was proud to present an evening with legendary New York-based Russian artist Vitaly Komar, at Jean-Jacques, Soho on February 18th. Renowned for his innovation, insight and humour, Komar was, along with long-time collaborator Alexander Melamid, the founder of Sots Art, an enormously influential movement which applied the ironic sensibilities of Pop Art to the dogmas of Soviet power. The impact of the duo’s work from the 1970s was recently explored at the The World Goes Pop exhibition at Tate Modern, which played host to Komar’s work again as part of their Performing for the Camera show (opened February 18th).
At Jean-Jacques, Komar gave an illustrated lecture discussing the wide range of his works with Melamid that blend the animal with the human, including their 1998 photo series ‘Moscow in Mickey’s Eyes’, co-authored by the eponymous chimpanzee, heroic depictions of pioneering dog-cosmonaut Laika, Old Master-style portraits of dinosaurs and much more. Tracing this theme over the course of his career, Komar showed how in its eclecticism, in its fusion of man and beast, Sots Art anticipated the central tendencies of post-modernism.
