The Thursday Night @ Develop in aid of SpecialEffect party! 2026 (w/ added Maraoke!) Help Simon Barratt raise money to support SpecialEffect

At Centroid, we thrive on innovation and solving ambitious creative and technical challenges with our clients.

For this week's Centroid30, we're revisiting our work with Unit 9, on this incredible advert for G-Active by Gatorade; shot at Shepperton in 2016.

The technology behind it was built from scratch, with motion capture used to drive the movement of the water and over 2,500 switches working together to create the final effect.

With temperatures soaring this week, looking back at thousands of perfectly choreographed water droplets feels especially refreshing... if not a little tortuous!

Next in our Centroid30 series, we're looking at horse capture. Mocap for horses. Horsecap? Equicap?

Back in 2008, we spotted something others hadn't yet fully embraced: the growing demand for realistic horse motion capture.
Rather than waiting for a project to force us to learn, our now CEO, Phil Stilgoe, organised an internal horse capture shoot to develop the expertise ourselves and we very quickly learnt that taping the markers directly onto the horse isn’t as effective as a custom made mocap suit. Once complete, the results were burned onto CD-ROMs and hand-delivered around Shepperton Studios, landing on the desks of key decision makers.

It worked.

Soon afterwards, we received a call from the VFX Supervisor on Ridley Scott's Robin Hood (2010), leading to our first major horse capture project.

That early investment in specialist animal capture opened the door to a string of landmark productions, including Prince of Persia, Game of Thrones’ Battle of the Bastards and Assassin's Creed Origins (where we also captured Camels!)
