Following the incredible campaign work by Delyth Fetherston-Dilke, highlighting the growing concern surrounding upholstery regulations in the UK, SCP would like to shed some light on our own upholstery ranges.
Our upholstery collection is free from foam and fire retardants. Foam, being petrochemical based, is the key unsustainable material in modern upholstery, and at SCP we believe it has to be removed from products to ensure they are truly sustainable. To ensure a sustainable product, SCP uses a range of natural materials in the upholstery process as a replacement for foam. Utilising alternatives including rubberised coconut fibre, engineered wools, natural latex and feathers. Fire retardant chemicals off-gas VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the environments they exist in, both in their time retained in furniture and fabrics, and during the process of their disposal. By removing them we can improve the well-being of our customers, our staff and the world we live in.

As we prepare to leave Curtain Road, we’re taking a moment to look back at where it all began in 1985.
The story of how SCP was founded in Shoreditch is one of pragmatism, a little imagination, and a fortuitous dose of happenstance.
SCP founder Sheridan Coakley was a regular visitor to Shoreditch in the early 1980s, due to the fact that some vestiges of the furniture industry, which had been the mainstay of the area since the late 19th century, were still present.
At the time, Coakley was trading in early 20th century furniture from the modernist movement from a small shop on Westbourne Grove. He had started to re-issue under license a small number of Pel designs, under the pre-SCP titled SC Products brand.
