"SALOME AT YORK HALL: 'A TANTALISING AND VISCERAL WONDER'" - Reviews Hub

Mark Ravenhill’s production of Salome at York Hall strips away the gilded decadence of Oscar Wilde’s original, replacing it with something far more compelling: a visceral, down-at-heel intensity that feels urgent and alive.

"This tantalising and visceral wonder transports the traditional opera fluidly into a non-conventional space." Wine boxes replace goblets, plastic cups stand in for crystal, and Salome’s legendary dance unfolds in a “furry blue negligee with the allure of a bin-bag”. Creating a provocative, charged and bloody spectacle that refuses to look away.

Kirsty Taylor-Stokes delivers a Salome who is “a sullen teenager in a baggy Guns’n’Roses tee shirt”, her “full-bodied voice enchanting and terrifying” as she oscillates between “world-defying brattishness” and “profound vulnerability”.

Freddie Tong’s Jochanaan “emanates disgust” with his “magnificent bass-baritone voice”, while Mae Heydorn’s Herodias “owns the stage” in “silver stilettos”, her “glamour on the plywood palace floor” nothing short of “startling”.

Robin Whitehouse’s Herod, “a fussy little man with a ratty ponytail”, oozes “creepy” obsession, anchoring the drama with unsettling precision.

The “catwalk-cum-stage” forces “constant movement”, creating an immersive experience where “the thrill of hearing excellent singers at close quarters” becomes “a significant reward”.

The “baby-blue faux fur garment” replacing the seven veils “makes a powerful statement”, and the “grubbiness of the setting” only heightens the tension.
“Oscar Wilde’s Salome made squalid is a valid and interesting interpretation.”

OUR AUDIENCE IS WHAT MAKES SALOME UNFORGETTABLE—THANK YOU! ❤️

As we return to York Hall tonight for the third of our six performances, it felt like a good time to say this:

Your passion, energy, and kind words mean everything to us. Salome at York Hall has been a shared triumph, and we’re thrilled to hear how much it resonated with you.

Here’s what you’ve been saying:
🌟 "Another triumph for Regents Opera, Kirsty Taylor-Stokes magnificent in the title role."
🌟 "This Salome production has wonderful singers and orchestra. The audience is close to the stage, so you see and feel all the emotions portrayed by the singers, which draws you in to this rather gruesome plot. We were captivated by it."
🌟 "I absolutely loved it! Salome was a top-class actress, dancer, and world-class soprano. She kept us wanting more!! And the rest of the cast, the orchestration, EVERYTHING was wonderful. The venue different from the 'traditional' opera places, but it worked very well. Strongly recommend it. A real treat."
🌟 "What a wonderful production! The simple staging works well, sound quality great, amazing cast, full-size outstanding band - what more could you ask?"
🌟 "Each and every one of the performers was amazing! The acoustic of the venue was one of the best I've ever experienced. Both the music and the singing were very clear. The unconventional location meant the audience was very close to the performers, and it was possible to appreciate the interpretation and the acting as well as the singing."
🌟 "An excellent production of a most challenging piece. The singing and acting were consistently good and the orchestra played ravishingly well. The set and direction were both creative, and the story was told very well. It was most impressive all round!"
🌟 "Great venue with a warm, friendly welcome. Great view. Intense at times, gruesome performance. Quality cast and musicians."
🌟 "We were delighted to have the opportunity to attend an opera we were unfamiliar with. [...] The quality of the singers was excellent, and Eleanor Dennis, who played Salome on the night we attended, brought the music and sensuality of the character to life in a stunning performance. The other performers and the orchestra were very professional, and it was a most enjoyable evening. The venue was very welcoming, and the staff extremely helpful. A very positive experience."

THANK YOU for being part of this journey. Your enthusiasm, support, and love for opera - especially if it's new found! - make every performance special. We’re already dreaming up what’s next, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

📅 Final performances of Salome: 18th, 19th, 21st, 23rd April
