Annie Crook was a young working-class woman employed in London during the late Victorian period, most famously associated with controversial theories surrounding the Jack the Ripper murders. According to claims popularised by writer Stephen Knight in the 1970s, Annie Crook allegedly worked in a shop near Cleveland Street and became romantically involved with Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence. The theory claimed she secretly married the prince and gave birth to a child, leading to an elaborate conspiracy involving Freemasons, the Royal Family, and the Whitechapel murders.

However, historians and Ripper researchers have found little reliable evidence to support these allegations. Much of the story originated from statements made decades later by Joseph Gorman, also known as Joseph Sickert, who claimed to possess inside knowledge of the conspiracy. Researchers have since challenged many aspects of his account, including dates, identities, and documented movements of those involved.

The real Annie Crook did exist and appears in historical records as a working-class woman who suffered from epilepsy and spent time in institutions during her later life. Her story reflects the harsh realities faced by poor women in Victorian London, where illness, poverty, and social stigma often led to confinement and hardship.
