PRACTICAL GUIDE: The Final Rights (UPDATED)

What to do if a loved one dies?

1. Family member in hospital: The hospital will usually allow you to visit before they pass away. They will only allow a limited number of people for a limited amount of time due to COVID-19 restrictions. It is difficult for hospital staff, so please try to bear this in mind.

2. Once the person has passed away: We ask Allah SWT to have mercy on all of our deceased. You need to ask the Dr/Nurse in the ward to arrange a MCCD (Medical Certificate of Cause of Death). This will be handled by the doctor who has been dealing with the deceased person.

3. Local Registrar’s Office: Once complete, the MCCD will be emailed to the registrar's office of the borough in which the deceased passed away e.g. Tower Hamlets for The Royal London Hospital.

An appointment is required with the registrar's office - this can be booked online or over the phone

Please have the following important information ready:

• Name of the deceased
• Date of birth
• Address
• Your relationship to them
• Funeral director details

4. The Funeral Director: Once complete, the registrar will send a green slip to the chosen funeral director.

The funeral director will now be in a position to arrange the date of the burial (depending on where you have chosen for the burial to take place)

Once the date is confirmed, the funeral director will then arrange:

a) Collection of the body from the mortuary
b) Time for washing the body
c) Time for Janazah prayer
d) The burial itself

Some common Funeral directors details (London based):

Gardens of Peace: 020 8502 6000

Haji Taslim: 020 7247 2625

Volunteer based groups (will arrange for the body to be collected, washed and taken to the burial place for free):

Supporting Humanity: +44 7941 874477

Muslim Burial Care: 020 8125 4999

5. General advice and points to consider:

a) At present, due to restrictions, Gardens of Peace can only allow a limited number to attend the burial. They are working extremely hard and trying their best to facilitate as many burials as possible. Please pre-arrange the people and do not turn up with more, since that will cause further distress and will delay others being buried.

b) As mosques are still open, try to arrange the Janazah at a mosque so more people can pray the Janazah prayer over your family member. Speak to your funeral director to arrange this.

c) Learn the basics of Janazah prayer (ICeurope.org/JanazahPrayer)

d) Visiting cemeteries - please check opening times beforehand

e) The cost of the burial plot depends on the burial site. Each funeral director will charge this, plus additional costs for collecting the body, arranging the washing and transporting the body.

However, Supporting Humanity and Muslim Burial Care are currently volunteering and doing the transportation and washing for free.

The government also provide help with funeral costs (gov.uk/funeral-payments)

f) Try to set up a Waqf for your loved ones.

We ask Allah SWT to have mercy on all of our deceased Muslim brothers and sisters and for Allah to help us all during this difficult time
