Today marks the enchanting β¨ winter solstice π, a time when the world embraces the longest night and welcomes the promise of returning light. We hope youβre revelling in the warmth of cherished company π as we prepare for the holiday π· feast or cosy hibernation π ahead.
π΄ππ΄
Though winter solstice evokes images of leafless trees and chilling nights, letβs take a moment to honour the hidden lives of surrounding species that endure the cold nights with us. Thanks to them, we can forage locally & wildly grown chemical compounds that nature has in abundance for us to experiment with for creating sustainable colours/coatings/formulae π
ππ¬πΏ
In one of our foraging adventures, we stumbled upon a magical β¨ tiny baby snail πΆπ who accidentally hitched a ride back to our lab along with the foraged plants. This little snail was so adorable ππ₯° We made sure that our wee friend was safely reunited with its snail mates, letting it continue its adventure in east London wilderness.
πππ
This winter solstice, letβs celebrate not just the human connections but also the intricate web of life around us πΈπ In our pursuit of environmentally beneficial creations, weβre constantly reminded of the beauty and resilience of itty-bitty creatures that cross paths with us and the valuable lessons they can teach us if weβre open to learning.
πππ
As we embrace the changing seasons, may the winter solstice inspire us to cherish the unseen stories, the silent companions, and the symbiotic relationships that thrive even in the coldest times π Share your tales of unexpected encounters with nature or your cosy winter traditions in the comments below with us!

ππββοΈπββοΈ
We have been invited to contribute to this feature since last summer and the National Geographic editing team has decided to include our bioprinted textile sample created by embedding photosynthetic microbes π¦ into the substrate with a digitally printed pattern π¦Ύπ¦Ώ
π§€π§ͺπΏ
We also feel honoured π₯° to see our work has made it into the final edits amongst other mind-blowing innovations like artificial diamonds , vodka and aviation fuel , all made from captured CO2.
βοΈπΎπ
Ever since our account was targeted by Instagram bots last year, we felt a bit disheartened to keep posting. However, now we have better protection mechanisms in place, we will try to share more updates from our work here again ππ€
It is a pleasure to welcome our new friends here and to have our old mates around π₯°
