Maha Shivaratri in Mauritius: A Time for Devotion and Safety

Maha Shivaratri is a sacred and deeply spiritual time for all Hindus in Mauritius. Every year, thousands of devotees embark on their pilgrimage to Grand Bassin, carrying their Kanwars with love, faith, and devotion. However, in the past two years, we have witnessed heartbreaking tragedies; two Kanwars caught fire, leading to the tragic loss of our Mauritian brothers. These incidents shook the entire nation and left us mourning as one people.

With the new government in place, regulations have been introduced regarding the size and safety of Kanwars. This is a step in the right direction. Some may see it as a restriction, but I see it as a necessary measure to prevent further loss of life. If someone does not follow these guidelines, they will have to pay a fine. While this may seem harsh to some, I would rather see my fellow citizens pay a fine than lose their lives. Seeing a brother die on the road last year was unbearable, and I do not wish for any family to go through such pain again.

To our police officers, I have a humble request; please be kind, be respectful, and speak to the pilgrims with patience and understanding.
And to my fellow pilgrims, I urge you; please do not swear at officers, do not provoke them, and do not create unnecessary drama if you are stopped for a check. Rules are there for our safety, and respecting them ensures a peaceful and blessed journey for all.

Let Maha Shivaratri be a time of unity, respect, and devotion. May Lord Shiva bless Mauritius with peace and protection. Har Har Mahadev!

Many Mauritians are questioning the timing of this decision.
On a Sunday night, the courts are still delivering rulings, something that rarely happens for ordinary citizens. If it were a regular person, would they have been sent straight back to jail? Is this a case of special treatment, or is there more to the story?
