Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wants all children in England to study maths until the age of 18.

But what will that look like?

The government has already ruled out compulsory A-level maths, but there are a multitude of courses and options that could enable young people to develop their numeracy skills post-16.

We wholeheartedly support the idea of expanding maths education. After all, valuing maths and understanding the opportunities it brings for employment and earnings beyond school is one of our guiding philosophies!

What about you and your child - how do they feel about the prospect of studying maths beyond GCSE?

It might sound silly but practicing the journey into school a couple of times can really help with those first day nerves.

In fact, preparing your child for the commute to their new school can help them to feel calmer and more confident.

If they need to take a bus or train, encourage them to check the timetables so they know what time they need to leave the house on school mornings.

If they’re walking in, make sure they know the way and see if they can meet with friends along the route, so they don’t have to walk in alone. This could be especially useful on the dark winter evenings and mornings.

Many pupils get dropped to school by a family member, so it may help to check if there's a car park at school. If not, take a look at parking restrictions on nearby side roads so you can find somewhere safe to drop them off.
