'Waitomo Glowworm Caves'

of 'Mother Earth' challenge

The Waitomo Glowworm Caves attraction is a cave at Waitomo on the North Island of New Zealand. It is known for its population of Arachnocampa luminosa, a glowworm species found exclusively in New Zealand.

The name 'Waitomo' comes from the Maori words wai, water and tomo, hole or shaft. Geological and volcanic activity has created around 300 known limestone caves in the Waitomo region over the last 30 million years.

The limestone formation in the Waitomo Glowworm Caves occurred when the region was still under the ocean about 30 million years ago. The limestone is composed of fossilized corals, seashells, fish skeletons, and many small marine organisms on the sea beds.

Borneo

of 'Mother Earth' challenge

The place that holds the largest potential for new discoveries is the Heart of Borneo. It harbours large and continuous tracts of virgin montane forest, much of which remains unexplored.

Borneo is home to some of the largest and most magnificent hornbill species, many of which are endangered. The Rhinoceros Hornbill has a very distinctive, brightly coloured casque on top of its beak, and each individual's eye colour allows you to determine its s*x - male's eyes are red and females' are white.

The Miller's Grizzled Langur is a rare monkey species with bristly sideburns and it has been 'rediscovered' in a forest in northeastern Borneo. It has a dark face and unmistakably pure-white sideburns which is why it's called the Dracula Monkey.

Redwood forest
of 'Mother Earth' challenge

Giant sequoias and California redwoods are nature's skyscrapers. These enormous trees exist primarily in Northern California, Oregon and Washington and though they have a number of common characteristics, including distinctive cinnamon-red bark, they are different species. Redwoods reach heights of more than 350 feet (107 m). The tallest tree in the world is named Hyperion, which reaches 379.7 feet (115.7 m).
