Today, Ruby concluded her one-to-one recall sessions, and what a journey it has been.
When we first met, Ruby presented as a underconfident dog. Watching her grow in confidence, trust, and freedom over the past few weeks has been incredibly rewarding. In just three short sessions, she has gone from being a dog who was largely kept on lead to one who is now flourishing off lead.
This transformation wasn’t achieved through a magic trick or a single training exercise. It was the result of a well-structured plan, consistent practice, and owners who fully committed to the process.
One of the biggest misconceptions about recall is that it’s simply a trained behaviour. People often think that if they find a high-value treat and practise enough repetitions, they’ll get a reliable recall. While reinforcement absolutely matters, recall is about so much more than that.
I’m not particularly “woo-woo”, but I do believe that great recall is built on relationship. It’s about the connection between three points: the dog, the person, and the environment.
Of course, we use all the tools available to us. With Ruby, we paired things she loves—her ball, whistle cues, hand-target touches, and reinforcement games such as finding hidden treats or chasing a biscuit. These all played an important role.
But perhaps the most important part of the process was helping Ruby’s owners understand Ruby a little better. That understanding led to trust, and that trust gave Ruby the confidence to make good choices.
You’re not in competition with your dog. Recall isn’t about forcing a response; it’s about creating a dog who wants to respond.
Ruby is a wonderful example of what can happen when we focus on the whole picture rather than just the behaviour itself.
Well done, Ruby. We’re incredibly proud of you. ❤️
