Happy International Nurses Day to all the amazing nurses I’ve met throughout my career!

Nursing is such a unique career and one that brings you so much life experience, opportunities and reflection. Looking back, it has led me to meet some truly inspiring people and friends around the world.

One of the moments I’ll never forget was when I was on placement working in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. While I was there, the midwife allowed me to deliver a little baby on my own. We had no electricity or running water and the mothers identified their babies by wrapping them up in their scarfs. Fathers were also not allowed to be present at birth, but were the only ones who were allowed to name them.

I still remember standing there with just a bed, a large orange bucket, the mother and the midwife. It was a silent birth, meaning the mother wasn’t allowed pain relief or to make any noise, or the baby would be cursed. I remember feeling completely amazed watching this little tiny person come into the world and the mother was incredibly strong. In fact, I think I made more noise than her 😂

Nursing can be challenging, exhausting and emotional, but moments and experiences like this make it worth it 🤍
