URGENT ACTION - WHALE HUNTERS NOT WELCOME IN YORKSHIRE

A group of whale hunters who actively participate in the pilot whale slaughter on the Faroe Islands are set to headline a music festival at York Barbican on 20 February.

The venue is owned by City of York Council. Please send a polite email to the venue and the council leadership asking for the whale hunters to be dropped from the show.

The same venue is also hosting an oceans film festival, which is a great way to inspire people to protect marine line - something hosting whale hunters goes directly against.

SAMPLE LETTER:

Dear Councillors,

I write to celebrate the City of York Council-owned Barbican hosting an ocean film festival later this month.

There is little more powerful than seeing, through film, the mesmerising marine life and ecosystems which our oceans host. The film festival will no doubt leave many empowered to protect the world’s oceans – not least the waters close to home in Yorkshire, where visiting dolphins and whales leave those lucky enough to see them with a powerful experience.

I feel, however, that this valuable work is undermined by the York Barbican hosting the band ‘TYR’ during the ‘Jorvik Takeover’ in February.

The venue may not have been aware when booking TYR that band members actively take part in and publicly-endorse the barbaric pilot whale hunt on the Faroese Islands.

During the hunts, known as the ‘grindadrap’, these gentle sea creatures are herded by fleets of boats onto the island’s shores, where awaiting participants drive knives and lances into the whales’ bodies. What’s more, many of the whales take a long period to die from these painful injuries, with some suffocating from choking on their own blood.

The whale hunt, which takes the lives of hundreds of these intelligent creatures annually, has caused a global outcry from those who want to see cetaceans given the protection they so desperately need and deserve.

Surely, as a responsible and environmentally-focused council, York Council will ensure that TYR are removed from its venue’s list because of the involvement of the band and its members in this brutal whale slaughter?

I look forward to your response.
