Through transpiration, they release water vapour into the air; as this water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the surrounding environment, helping to lower temperatures naturally.

During wetter months, tree canopies slow the rate at which rainwater reaches the ground and drains, helping to reduce surface water and the risk of flooding.
