ITV News has recently highlighted the challenges facing SEND families β€” something we recognise deeply through our work at The Fidget Project.

Families regularly share experiences of navigating formal processes, completing required documentation, and waiting for extended periods while decisions are made. During this time, communication can often feel limited or unclear, adding further stress to already complex situations.

For many children, these delays have a real impact on confidence, wellbeing, and access to education.

We fully acknowledge the pressures faced by schools and local authorities, particularly in rural areas like Devon where resources are stretched.

However, even within these constraints, families consistently tell us that clear communication, responsiveness, and follow-through can make a significant difference.

SEND and neurodivergent children have a legal right to an education that meets their needs. Ensuring this right is upheld in practice requires both systemic support and human accountability at every level.

Some things that help children at school can feel so small, they almost feel too simple to ask for.

Like being allowed to take their shoes off in the classroom.

No specialist provision. No lengthy assessment. No waiting list.

Just a teacher who understands that something like tight shoes can be a constant sensory distraction β€” another demand on a nervous system already working hard.

Sometimes the smallest adjustments make the biggest difference.

If you’re a parent trying to find the words to have these conversations with school, we can help. It starts with understanding your child’s sensory profile.

Please feel free to share this with someone who might need it πŸ’œ

The Government has just published its response to the Solving the SEND Crisis report, and there's a lot to take in.

There are real commitments here β€” more funding for early support, specialists going into schools, new national standards, and a clear acknowledgement that the current system is failing children and families. That matters.

But if you're a parent who's spent months (or years) navigating waiting lists, fighting for an EHCP, or being told your child doesn't quite meet the threshold β€” you'll know that announcements aren't the same as change on the ground.

We're reading through it carefully. The full link is below if you want to dig in yourself. And as always, if you need support right now, we're here β€” you don't have to wait for a reformed system to find your community.

πŸ’› Have you noticed your child chewing sleeves, repeating movements, or seeking certain sensory behaviours?

What may look unusual to others is often a child's way of regulating emotions, processing sensory input, or finding calm in an overwhelming world.

In this carousel, we explore:
✨ What stimming is
✨ Why children stim
✨ When support may help
✨ Safe and supportive strategies for parents

Understanding stimming starts with understanding your child's needs β€” not trying to stop behaviours that may actually help them cope.
