“Women’s rights are regressing worldwide.” UN Women

I keep thinking about that line, and what it means in real life, not just in reports particularly with the landscape in the Highlands right now.

Because it isn’t abstract. It’s the person in your class who has survived sexual violence and never said it out loud. It’s the woman trying to rebuild her life while waiting months for support. It’s the fact that services like Women’s Aid are closing, and services are expected to carry more and more with less and less.

The misconception is that we don't have gender based violence in the rural Highlands but that isn't true.

Yoga often talks about compassion, truth, and non-harming. But those ideas don’t mean much if we only apply them when it feels comfortable or “non-political”.

I don’t think yoga teachers need to turn every class into a lecture. But I do think we have to be honest that neutrality isn’t neutral. Not when people are being harmed and systems are failing them.

Yoga doesn’t stop at the mat. It never really has.

It has to mean something in how we show up for each other in the world we’re actually living in.

In solidarity with survivors, and with the people and services holding so much of this work every day. And in objection to mysogyny and inequality in decision making.
