It’s been over a week since BBC EastEnders said goodbye to long-time character, Nigel Bates, who was living with young onset dementia.
We were delighted to advise the BBC on the storyline and applaud the sympathetic and sensitive portrayal by actor Paul Bradley, especially as Nigel's dementia symptoms worsened.
The storyline has helped shine a light on young onset dementia, raising much needed awareness around the challenges younger people and their families face.
By highlighting Nigel’s dementia symptoms, the impact they had on his relationships, and the struggle his family and friends experienced when trying to find a suitable care home, EastEnders has helped people in similar situations know they are not alone.
If Nigel's young onset dementia storyline has resonated with you, or you would like support around any aspect of dementia, you can speak to our Admiral Nurses by calling our Helpline on 0800 888 6678 or emailing [email protected].

It's Mental Health Awareness Week.
When you're the one looking after Mum, or popping in on Dad, or holding things together for someone you love — it's easy to put your own head right at the bottom of the list.
This week we're thinking about the families who do that quietly, day in, day out. Looking after the people we love starts with looking after ourselves.
If a bit of help at home would lift some weight, we'd love to chat. There's no pressure and no obligation — just a cuppa and a proper conversation about what would actually help.
