We are in Palma and I decided to buy some espadrilles. I entered the shop and greeted the assistant in my best Spanish. I studied Spanish for 6 years at school and university level. Ok so that was an friggin long time ago. The assistant replied in English. David who has an enquiring mind asked why she was speaking in English to someone so clearly fluent in Spanish. Her reply was - your wife has an English accent and is exceptionally polite so I spoke in English. Turns out I don’t even know how to say Hola in an informal manner so I sent David for a beer and we had an impromptu Spanish lesson as the shop wasn’t busy. I wanted to know - how can I sound like a native speaker? She taught me how to greet and say goodbye, how to ask how the person is doing, how to show politeness, how to ask where is the person from and other common Spanish phrases- - in short a survival kit to communicating with Spanish native speakers. So hasta luego to hola and now it’s buena (hi). Buenos Dias, buenos tardes, buenos noches and for you alone smith buenos airez. 😂
