Exeter was cut off from its port for THREE CENTURIES!
In the 1200s, Isabella de Fortibus built a weir across the River Exe.
🚢 Ships couldn’t reach Exeter.
💰 They had to unload at her port in Topsham.
📦 She collected the tolls. The city lost its trade.

For centuries, Exeter was stuck — until they dug their own canal to get around it.

The area is still called Countess Wear, named after the woman who blocked the river.
