This is an old post but it highlights the importance of checking diagnostic data even on an engine swap...

We help alot of customers making their ECU effectively a standalone ECU to work in another chassis. But all to often we here they haven't wired in an OBD port for diagnostics.

In the last week we have done an engine swap in our sponsored E36 Touring with an M62B44 non vanos. The car started and ran well but on the dyno was making less than 250bhp! While it still made good torque it was clearly under performing.

Datalogging and fault codes showed the knock sensors at fault and when we looked further we found the wiring on the sensors itself to be at fault causing the engine to be in limp mode. Without an OBD port we would have only been guessing and unlikely to have looked at this.

Not an easy job to swap out as it was inlet off but with new sensors we are back up to 320bhp ready for this car to hit the track at the end of the month.
