My mum was born in Italy in 1932, the middle child of seven siblings. She dreamed of becoming a teacher but had to leave school at a young age. After the war, she moved to Rome for work and then to the UK in 1952. Her father, who had been a prisoner of war in the UK, fell in love with the country and wanted to return. He sent my mum ahead, and eventually, her parents and siblings followed.

In 1956, my mum married my dad, and they had three children, with me being the youngest and only girl. My mum was incredibly smart. She taught herself English and was practical, funny, and loving. She ran a corner shop with my dad, proving herself to be a savvy businesswoman. She was excellent with numbers and a natural communicator, earning great respect from her customers, who adored her for her intelligence and humour. She was always caring and encouraged everyone to do their best.

Throughout my life, she has been my biggest champion, always the first to support my business ventures. I am immensely proud of her. Even at 92, having lived with dementia for about 15 years, she maintains her unique spirit and zest for life. The early years of her illness were very challenging, but she faced them with her characteristic fighting spirit. More recently she has lost clear speech yet her intelligence, humour, and love still shine through. She is simply my hero!

Today was totally different and incredibly special. I had the privilege of visiting Westminster and meeting with a London MP to discuss business. A huge thank you to YBC Ted for the invite! 🙏 It was such an enlightening experience, and I'm grateful for the opportunity.
