Great Grog

Often overlooked for it's frothier, more frivilous Italian cousin Prosecco, Cava is a great Champagne alternative for those more budget minded. Mainly produced in the Penedes region a little north of Barcelona from Chardonnay, Xarel - lo and Paralleda grapes. It's secondary fermentation takes place in bottle (as champagne) rather than tank (as prosecco). With one of the by products of fermentation being CO2, fermentation in bottle forces this gas into solution creating finer bubbles than larger volume tank method. The wine is then aged on it's lees for a minimum of 9 months creating creamy, toasty, ye**ty notes and greater complexity to compliment the traditional citrus, apple and pear fruit profile. It tastes dryer than your average prosecco with less obvious acidty than champagne.
Come along to Richard's Fizz tasting on 23rd July and try the Cava Can X (£13.29) and remind yourself just how tasty it is. Tickets on our website.

Life of Grog ...
Simon
An oddly chirpy Teesider who was formerly known as an artist after 3 years at the Edinburgh college of Art (he does the Grog Wine List covers). Simon loves a drop of wine and tends to know slightly more about what he’s drinking than the people who made it. He will pontificate at length on many things including wine, art, bicycles, mountains and Ridley Scott (who was also from Middlesbrough). Grogger since 2004.
