Meet Majeda: the Syrian chef turning food into activism. At home in Damascus, Majeda was a human rights activist. Forced to flee during the war in 2015, she had to leave her family and travel to Lebanon. But in 2017, Majeda’s life turned upside-down again after she travelled to Scotland to attend a feminist fellowship and was forced to seek sanctuary here in the UK. Food quickly became a useful tool for settling in, with cooking classes helping her to build a community, learn English and share stories from home. “I wasn’t a cook at home, but I started thinking about what I could do to keep up my activism and to highlight human rights issues back in Syria,” she said. With help from The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network (TERN), Majeda launched a social enterprise business, The Syrian Sunflower, which provides refugee women with training and employment. Her company also caters graduation events for IRC training programmes, where refugees can celebrate their successes. Now, our Refugee Employability Programme is partnering with TERN to provide even more refugees with the tools to rebuild their lives in the UK.
